Desert Plants

Vegascape Landcaping Company specializes in plant selection to insure exceptional landscaping balance and design. Las Vegas has a climate all of its own. Only half the annual rainfall of parched Phoenix, it provides challenges and opportunities for a Las Vegas garden. Just because it’s a desert does not mean it doesn’t get cold. In winter it is literally freezing. There are not many parts of the world where temperature varies so much. This is a challenge for your foliage.

My favorites include:

  • Chaste trees (vitusagnus – castus which bloom a riot of purple flowers throughout our scorching Mojave Summer.
  • Birds-of-Paradise (Caeselpiniagillieslii or pulcherrima) introduce huge bright and vivid reds and oranges, a startling contrast against our crisp turquoise, big Nevada sky.
  • Red Yucca (Hesperaloeparviflora) is immune to pest-damage and makes a perfect hummingbird feed.
  • Jubilee Honeysuckle (TecomaStans) is stunning drought resistant plant, lush yet water efficient is the Orange or yellow Jubilee Honeysuckle (TecomaStans). It is known by many other names including esperanza, trumpet flower and yellow elder.

Some desert plants, despite their tough appearance can be difficult to grow, and very delicate without the right amendments and expert attentions. The Springs Preserve on Valley View is well worth a visit to inspire ideas for your garden. But then a visit to a local nursery to see what is actually available.

Some plants thrive in our Summer only to freeze to death in our Winter. The sultry Queen Palms and tropical Pygmy palms spring to mind. Unfortunately the best they will look is the day they are planted.

Our estimates cost nothing, so feel free to pick our brain.
